12-Year Diesel Generator Set Manufacturers Teach You How to Design a Soundproof Enclosure

Nowadays, people's environmental awareness is increasing, and diesel generator sets, as backup power sources for the power grid, are widely used with soundproof enclosures due to their low noise levels. Generator sets with soundproof enclosures can achieve noise reduction of up to 30dB. However, there is still a significant gap between domestic products and foreign ones, as shown in Table 1 below. In response to this, a soundproof enclosure for the Cummins 460KW diesel generator set was designed using various noise reduction technologies, reducing the noise from 108dB to below 75dB, resulting in a significant noise reduction effect.

The soundproof enclosure for the diesel generator set has strong sealing properties, a high level of waterproofing and dustproofing, and is resistant to the entry of rainwater and sand dust. It is easy to lift, transport, and has high safety performance, an attractive appearance, and a reasonable structure. The enclosure adopts a modular design, making it easy to install. It is equipped with grounding protection, an emergency stop button, quick connectors, and other features. It can be used outdoors in various harsh environments such as high temperatures, deserts, rain, snow, and high-altitude mining sites.

For example, when dealing with the noise of the Cummins 460KW generator set, since the set has already undergone anti-vibration treatment, there is no need to address the issue of vibration. Based on the above analysis, the enclosure's wall panels use 2.0mm steel plates as the outer shell, with 40mm rock wool as the sound-absorbing material. They are then fixed with 1.0mm perforated plates to form an integrated structure for easy installation. The intake and exhaust mufflers adopt a folded plate reactive muffler design. The folded plates are combined with sound-absorbing material on both sides of the steel plate and fixed with perforated plates. The design of the intake muffler has a length of 350mm to increase the passive air intake and reduce the length of the enclosure by arranging it on both sides.

The length of the exhaust muffler is 2000mm due to the complex and high-level noise. For the engine exhaust outlet, to increase the insertion loss, a new reactive muffler is installed on top of the existing muffler, forming a secondary muffler to effectively reduce the exhaust noise. Double-layer doors are installed on both sides of the enclosure to ensure sound insulation and facilitate equipment maintenance.

Corresponding noise control techniques are adopted for each control zone to comprehensively control the noise level outside the enclosure to below 75dB, achieving a good soundproofing effect. If the generator set with a soundproof enclosure is placed inside an engine room, secondary noise reduction measures can be taken to further reduce the impact of noise.
