German Chancellor Olaf Scholz embarked on a West African tour on the 29th, visiting Nigeria and Ghana. In an interview with the media before his departure, he stated that Germany hopes to strengthen cooperation with Nigeria in the energy sector and seek to import natural gas from this energy-rich country.
Scholz told reporters from Nigeria's 'Critique Newspaper': "Nigeria is the largest natural gas supplier in Africa. German companies are interested in importing natural gas from this country and look forward to collaborating with Nigerian natural gas companies." Currently, Germany imports a significant amount of crude oil from Nigeria but has not yet imported natural gas.
Scholz also mentioned that, considering the future importance of hydrogen energy, Germany is exploring cooperation with Nigeria in the hydrogen energy market. According to him, both countries also have the potential for cooperation in agriculture, infrastructure, and mineral resources.
This is Scholz's third visit to Africa since becoming the German Chancellor less than two years ago. During his first African visit in May of last year, he visited Senegal and proposed German involvement in the development of Senegal's natural gas fields and the purchase of liquefied natural gas from Senegal.
Following Russia's special military operation in Ukraine in February 2022, the European Union imposed strict sanctions on Russia in various sectors, including oil, natural gas, and finance. This, in turn, created an energy crisis for countries in Europe, including Germany, leading to a downturn in the German manufacturing sector.
Earlier this month, in regional elections in the states of Hesse and Bavaria, Scholz's center-left Social Democratic Party and its coalition partners in the federal government, the Green Party and the Free Democratic Party, suffered significant defeats.
