Macron Announces France Will Phase Out Coal Power by 2027

French President Emmanuel Macron recently announced that, to promote ecological transition and achieve emission reduction targets, France will close and transform its last two coal-fired power plants by 2027.

During a television interview, Macron stated that traditional fossil fuels cause severe pollution and must be eliminated for ecological transition to take place. France currently has two coal power plants, one located in the western city of Cordemais and the other in the eastern city of Saint-Avold. These plants will be completely transformed into biomass energy power plants. He also noted that France will prioritize ecological transition during the process of "reindustrialization," such as promoting domestic production of electric vehicles.

France has long relied on nuclear energy for power generation, with a very low proportion of coal power. Data from the French transmission grid company for the year 2022 revealed that, despite the impact of some nuclear reactors undergoing maintenance, nuclear power accounted for 63% of the total electricity generated that year, while coal power represented only 0.6% during the same period.

Additionally, according to the European Union's "Fit for 55" emissions reduction plan, France is required to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% compared to 1990 levels by 2030."
