BASF Executive Chairman Applauds Chinese Wind Turbines, Advocates Against Trade Barriers

In a recent interview, Martin Brudermüller, the Executive Chairman of German chemical giant BASF, expressed high praise for Chinese wind turbines, emphasizing their superior performance and cost-effectiveness compared to European counterparts.

Brudermüller's remarks came in the context of discussing the Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind farm. He stated, "Compared to European turbines, Chinese turbines are not only better but also cheaper than ours."

The BASF executive highlighted the significance of the Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind farm, developed by Vattenfall with a capacity of 1500MW. It stands as the world's first subsidy-free offshore wind power project, considering the construction timeline.

BASF acquired a 49.5% stake in the project from Vattenfall in September 2021 and later sold a 25.2% stake to Allianz Insurance in December, retaining a 24.3% ownership share.

Brudermüller's positive assessment of Chinese turbines stems not only from BASF's involvement in European offshore wind projects but also from the company's collaboration with Ming Yang Smart Energy in constructing a 500MW offshore wind farm in South China. This collaboration led to the establishment of a joint venture named "Zhanjiang Ming Yang BASF New Energy Co., Ltd.," with Ming Yang holding a 90% stake and BASF holding the remaining 10%.

Addressing concerns raised by the European Wind Energy Association about unfair subsidies contributing to the competitiveness of Chinese turbines, Brudermüller urged a closer examination. He argued, "On-site observations reveal that Chinese turbine manufacturers are simply making better products."

In a cautionary note, he advised against Europe imposing trade barriers on Chinese turbines, particularly for export-oriented countries like Germany, deeming it a perilous move. Brudermüller concluded, "Europe should not 'raise fences' against Chinese turbines; it's especially dangerous for export-driven nations like Germany.
